RMR Calculator
Calculate Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) — calories burned at rest under everyday (non-fasted, non-strict) conditions.
What is RMR?
RMR is closely related to BMR but measured in less rigorous conditions: subjects do not need to be in a thermoneutral environment for 12 hours, just at rest and not recently exercising. In practice, RMR runs about 5–10% higher than BMR and is what most modern equations and metabolic carts report.
How is it calculated?
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (the most accurate predictive equation for healthy adults). RMR ≈ BMR for everyday calorie planning purposes.
Frequently Asked Questions
- RMR vs BMR — which to use?
- For most purposes the numbers are interchangeable.
- Does RMR change with weight loss?
- Slightly — RMR drops about 20 kcal per kilogram of weight lost.
- Can I increase RMR?
- Yes — building lean mass is the most reliable way.
