Sleep Debt Calculator

Calculate your weekly sleep debt — the gap between recommended sleep hours and what you actually get.

What is Sleep Debt?

Sleep debt accumulates whenever you sleep fewer hours than your body needs. Even small daily shortfalls (1 hour) compound across a week into 7+ hours of debt — equivalent to a missed full night of sleep. Catching up on the weekend helps but does not fully reverse the cognitive and metabolic effects of chronic restriction.

How is it calculated?

Sleep Debt = (Recommended − Actual) × Days. To repay, add 1 hour to your normal sleep each night until the debt clears, rather than one massive lie-in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can sleep debt be paid off?
Mostly, but not entirely — some effects on metabolism are slow to reverse.
How much sleep do adults need?
7–9 hours for most adults aged 18–64.
Are 'short sleepers' real?
Genuine short sleepers exist but are rare — most people who feel fine on 5h are under-performing.
